User Fees

There is no charge to CSU faculty, staff and graduate students for general consultation.

Our general consulting time is covered by funding from the Vice President for Research, the Agriculture Sciences Experiment Station, the College of Natural Sciences and the Statistics Department.

When we go beyond general consulting, we will either charge an hourly rate for smaller projects, create a contract for larger projects, or request support when we participate with a grant.

Authorship
Co-authorship is generally expected when consultants have made significant contributions to the research in the form of consultation, experimental design, method development, data analysis and/or data interpretation.  Significant can be defined as “the project would not have progressed, or progressed at a substantially slower pace, without the guidance of a statistical consultant”.  In such cases, consultants should have the opportunity to review and edit the appropriate sections of a manuscript before submission.

Acknowledgement of Statistical Laboratory contributions is expected in publications that include any data analyzed in the Statistical Laboratory or rely on significant consultation.  For example, acknowledgement is appropriate when fee-for-service is performed with no method development and minimum effort by Statistical Lab consultants.  An example of an appropriate acknowledgement is

“The authors wish to thank the Franklin A. Graybill Statistics and Data Science Laboratory at Colorado State University for data analysis (and/or statistical consulting)”.

Please also consider citing or acknowledging us by our Research Resource ID (RRID: SCR_022005) in publications that have involved the Stat Lab.

Please inform us when relevant publications are accepted and forward us a copy for our records.  We may also post citation information on our website.  This information is vital to the continued support of the facility.

Grant Assistance and Percent Effort
We are happy to provide letters of support and assistance in grant writing.  For letters of support and assistance in writing the analysis plan, please allow at least 2 weeks from the time of your request.  Please furnish the following information: Title of grant, agency to which you are submitting the grant, your title and mailing address, and 1-3 sentences on the goals (or specific aims) of your proposal.  The Stat Laboratory is also dependent on grant support for long-term success and we appreciate your support in keeping it funded.  To determine if percent effort by a consultant is required, please consider the following:

  • Are there large numbers of samples/data sets to be analyzed?
  • Would the aim or proposal not receive a favorable review without statistical support?
  • Would the project not have progressed, or progressed at a substantially slower pace, without consultation or method development by Statistical Laboratory consultants?
  • Does the proposal include a specific aim that focuses on statistical methods?
  • Is statistical method development required?

We request that the Graybill Stat Lab Core Facility be selected in the questionnaire of Kuali research, regardless of Stat Lab and personnel funding (e.g., even if only general consulting resources will be used).
