Mission

The Stat Lab provides statistical expertise for the benefit of advancing the quality of scientific research and education at Colorado State University and beyond while educating the next generation of applied statisticians.

How to Prepare for Initial Meeting

Projects in the design stage please come prepared with:

• Project summary and research questions
• Pilot study data and/or literature review

Projects in the analysis stage please come prepared with:

• Project summary and research questions
• Data
• Code and output (if applicable)

Expectations for General Consulting Clients:

• Be ready to describe your project, including your research questions.
• Come to meetings with specific questions and analysis ready data (if applicable).
• Try things on your own, to the best of your ability.  Our goal is to make recommendations and help you along.
• If you need support that goes beyond general consulting, we offer fee for service data analysis.

Policies:

We do not consult on course assignments or material. Please discuss course material with your instructor. 

We do not provide data management services, manuscript reviews or detailed proof-reading.

Most Stat Lab services are offered at no charge to graduate students, but we rely on support from individual faculty and colleges to make this possible.

Co-authorship is generally expected when consultants have made significant contributions to the research in the form of consultation, experimental design, method development, data analysis and/or data interpretation.  Significant can be defined as “the project would not have progressed, or progressed at a substantially slower pace, without the guidance of a statistical consultant”.  In such cases, consultants should have the opportunity to review and edit the appropriate sections of a manuscript before submission.

Acknowledgementof Statistical Laboratory contributions is expected in publications that include any data analyzed in the Statistical Laboratory or rely on significant consultation.  For example, acknowledgement is appropriate when fee-for-service is performed with no method development and minimum effort by Statistical Lab consultants.  An example of an appropriate acknowledgement is

“The authors wish to thank the Graybill Statistics and Data Science Laboratory at Colorado State University for data analysis (and/or statistical consulting)”.

Please also consider citing or acknowledging us by our Research Resource ID (RRID: SCR_022005) in publications that have involved the Stat Lab.

Please inform us when relevant publications are accepted and forward us a copy for our records.  We may also post citation information on our website.  This information is vital to the continued support of the facility.
